Physical Activity

Physical activity (PA) is very important in regards to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it keep your body healthy, but it has many positive effects for your mind too. For college students, a lot of changes are occurring and it is a huge transition to go from high school. Finding new friends, being in a different place, and having a change in pace and rigor of classes are only a few things that are happening during this time. Incorporating a good workout plan could help alleviate some of the stress that is occurring at this time. In a study that was done to look at the effects of sleep and physical activity among Indian college students, it was found that there were major associations between those with mental health problems and low PA levels. The study included 617 participants and a series of questionnaires. The results showed that when compared to students who had high physical activity, they were 10.42 times to have a low anxiety level per every one unit increase in their PA score. In terms of depression, those who were even moderately physically active, they were 8.93 times more likely to not have it (Ghrouz et al., 2019).

Wellness on Campus

One step in creating an environment that incorporates physical activity would be by bringing back fitness classes as a degree requirement instead of as an elective. The classes could include physical activity as well as provide an educational experience on how important exercise is. Since these habits need to be strong for an entire lifetime, it should be taught early on how crucial it is to be working out regularly (Petruzzello & Box, 2020). This would help to keep kids active throughout the week, and be able to have plenty of downtime for studying afterwards. This would also potentially motivate students to keep up with their habits and build more, even when the class has concluded,
